Set Up an Easy Mail Processing Area

If you receive a large volume of mail every day and you can’t sort it on your way back from the mailbox to the kitchen or office, you may want to set up a mail processing area. Pick a place where you have a clear surface area and are also within reach of the trash, recycling, and shredder. This could be in your office or kitchen.

Chris sorts her mail in the laundry room after dinner. With a glass of wine to keep her company, she looks at each piece of mail and decides what to do with it. Her laundry room has a trashcan, recycling bin , and cubbies for each household member. She also has a basket for catalogs. She stacks the magazines that will go on the coffee table. She opens the bills and makes a pile of them to take into the office.

You can create this type of scenario, too, in which sorting the mail becomes an easy process. I recommend first selecting a place where it’s convenient to have all the important pieces you will need every day in the same place. You can also make this area fun by adding a beautiful letter opener, decorative recycling bin or magazine basket, and perhaps put up inspiring photos or images so that you are looking at ideal travel destinations rather than wallowing in the bills. A mail processing area will make this an easier process so that you can keep up with the mail every day.
