I believe it is important to have a clear space in front of you before you start any big project. What can you get rid of that is around your computer? Do you have lots of sticky notes stuck to your monitor? Are there piles of papers surrounding you, “screaming” at you to deal with them? What would give you a clear space in which to focus on your project?
Set your timer for 10 minutes and focus on clearing just one of those topics: sticky notes, papers, other items that seemed decorative at the time but have now turned into clutter. It is important to be able to see what you have, sort out the items to keep, and decide what to eliminate.
Anything that you no longer need is trash: to be recycled, shredded, donated, delegated to someone else, or doesn’t belong in the office. If a particular item doesn’t belong in your office, use this time to take the dishes to the kitchen, return items to other rooms in your home, or to other people in your office. Take 10 minutes right now to remove whatever seems like clutter in order to create a much more clear, clean organized look to your office area.
